Frequently asked questions

  • How can we find out which drive is the best fit for our application, for example brushed or brushless?

Our experts assist in selecting the drive and review all options in order to find the best solution for your application. In general, brushless motors are increasingly used in power tools. They are low-wear and thus achieve a longer service life than brushed motors.

  • How does maxon ensure that the temperature of the motor housing does not get too hot to hold?

In principle, the surface of a hand-held device should not exceed approximately 43 °C if continuously in direct contact with the hand. The following points must be observed to keep the motor temperature low:

    • If possible, oversize the motor so that the load is lower.
    • Choose a brushless motor suitable for higher speeds (if the application demands speeds equal to or greater than approximately 15,000 rpm).
    • If PWM control is used, make sure that the inductance is not too low.
  • Which drive is the best fit for battery-powered devices to achieve the highest level of efficiency?

maxon drives are highly efficient, which makes them the perfect choice for battery-powered devices. In order to achieve the optimal level of efficiency, it is important to select a winding which is the best fit for the available battery power and the application operating point. In our standard product portfolio, we offer multiple windings for each motor. However, it is also possible to consider a custom winding if this is a better fit for the application.
